Course planning, Running Start, AP, college applications, FAFSA, scholarships, transcripts, careers, mental health — counselors help students plan their education and navigate what comes next.
ISR is 5 minutes — edits propagate to the live page within that window without a redeploy.
The counseling office is where MJSHS students go to plan their education, manage their schedule, get help when school is hard, and figure out what comes after. Counselors meet one-on-one with students on a regular cycle and any time a family asks.
Walk-ins are welcome during the school day. To schedule a family meeting, call (360) 249-4041 and ask for the counseling office.
Each spring counselors meet with students individually to plan the next year's schedule. Families are looped in by Skyward and at curriculum night.
Schedule change windows are limited — typically the first week of each semester. After that, changes are case-by-case and require a teacher signature, family signature, and a counselor meeting. Dropping a class after the first marking period results in a withdrawal mark on the transcript.
Running Start lets eligible juniors and seniors take college courses at Grays Harbor College tuition-free, earning HS and college credit at the same time. We work closely with GHC's Running Start advising team.
Eligibility is based on the GHC placement assessment (or equivalent SAT/ACT scores). The counseling office walks students through the application, helps build a balanced schedule of HS and college courses, and tracks credits each semester so graduation requirements stay on pace.
Running Start application timeline: spring of sophomore year for fall start. Drop in any time to ask questions.
We offer AP courses across English, math, science, and social studies. Students who pass the May AP exam can earn college credit at most universities — credit policy varies by school and by score.
AP exam registration happens in the fall through the counseling office; the College Board base fee applies and partial fee waivers are available for families on free/reduced meals — ask in the office, no judgment.
Counselors help with the Common App, the Coalition app, and Washington-state-specific applications (UW, WSU, the Washington Council). We can't fill the application out for you — but we'll review essays, write counselor recommendations, send transcripts, and help interpret offers.
Senior college application timeline starts in late summer of senior year. Keep an eye on:
Most families benefit from filing the FAFSA (free) or the WASFA for Washington students who can't file FAFSA. Both open October 1 each year for the following school year. The counseling office hosts a FAFSA help night in October — watch for the date.
Local scholarships include Bulldog Boosters, Booster Club athletic scholarships, the Montesano PTSA, and several community service organizations. Counselors maintain a scholarship list and post deadlines on the daily bulletin.
Current students — transcripts go to colleges through Parchment or directly from the counseling office. Ask a counselor; please give two business days' notice.
Alumni — official transcripts can be requested through Parchment (parchment.com) or by calling the counseling office. There is a small per-transcript fee through Parchment.
Not every senior is heading to a four-year university — and that's fine. Counselors help students explore:
If a student is struggling — anxiety, depression, grief, an eating concern, a hard family situation, thoughts of self-harm — please reach out. Counselors can connect students with in-school support, community partners, and family resources.
For an immediate crisis, dial 988 for the national suicide and crisis lifeline (24/7), or come to the counseling office during school hours. If you're worried about a student's safety right now, call us or 911.
The counseling team handles students alphabetically by last name; the office can tell you which counselor your student is assigned to. The counseling office also includes an office manager who helps families navigate paperwork.
Names and contact information for current counselors live on the staff directory (filtered by department).
