Hello Bulldog Families,
Welcome to another exciting school year at Montesano Jr/Sr High School! As we begin a new year together, I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving as your principal and to work alongside Assistant Principal Vaughn Uber. We are committed to supporting our students and staff and strengthening the partnerships with our families and community that make Montesano such a special place.
At MHS, we want every student to feel welcomed, supported, and challenged to be their best. This year, we will continue to build on the traditions and sense of pride that define our Bulldog community while creating meaningful opportunities for our students to learn, grow, connect, and succeed.
I am looking forward to the energy and possibilities that come with the start of a new school year. It is a privilege to serve this school community, and I cannot wait to see the many ways our students will learn, lead, and make us proud throughout the year.

Skyward & Grades
Students and families are encouraged to make a habit of checking grades at least weekly. Skyward is available as an app or through the Montesano School District website. Contact the school if you need help accessing Skyward.

FOR THE CLASS OF 2030
Service learning begins with this year's freshman class and continues throughout their four years of high school.
SERVICE LEARNING REQUIREMENT - CLASS OF 2030 Beginning with the Class of 2030, students will complete service learning hours throughout their four years of high school. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW • 5 hours each year • 20 hours total during grades 9-12 • Service hours must be earned during the student's high school career. GO ABOVE & BEYOND! Students who complete 100+ service learning hours by May of their senior year will earn a Community Service Honor Cord to wear at graduation! HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR HOURS 1. Complete a Service Learning Form. 2. Return it to Ms. Peterson in the Counseling Center. 3. Keep serving - every hour counts! NEW FOR 2026-2027 | what students & families need to know |
NEW BELL SYSTEM A bell now signals both the beginning and end of class. Students must be in the classroom, seated, and ready for instruction when the class bell rings or they will be marked tardy. Students should follow the school digital wall clocks for bell timing - not a phone or watch. |
CELL PHONE / ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY Cell phones and other personal electronic devices will not be used from bell to bell during class. Devices must be stored in the classroom cell-phone pocket or locker box unless a teacher permits use. Students may appropriately use phones before school, during passing periods, at lunch, and after school. Repeated violations may result in loss of electronic-device privileges for the remainder of the year. |

ATTENDANCE - THE ESSENTIALS |
• Excuse absences within 24 hours by calling 360-249-1634, emailing sfry@monteschools.org, using Skyward, or sending written notice to the Attendance Office.
• For early release, a parent/guardian note or phone call to the Attendance Office is required. Students must sign out whenever leaving before the normal 2:50 PM release time.
• Excused reasons may include illness, bereavement, doctor appointments, family emergencies, and religious-related events. Appointment documentation may be requested.
• Vacations or other absences outside the listed excused reasons require a pre-arranged absence form at least one week in advance.
• Examples of unexcused reasons include special outings, hair appointments, sleeping in/missing a ride, and trips without pre-arranged clearance.
TARDY REMINDERS 3 cumulative tardies: email notification to student and parent/guardian. 3 tardies in one class OR 5 cumulative tardies: lunch detention. After 5 cumulative tardies, every additional 1 tardy will result in lunch detention. |
Attendance concerns can lead to administrator contact, student support steps, attendance agreements, Community Attendance Board (CAB) referrals, and - at higher levels - truancy petitions. The school will work with students and families as concerns develop.

Cold and flu viruses can spread quickly through a school community. A few simple habits can help protect you and the people around you:
• Do not share personal-care items such as food utensils, chapstick, or water bottles.
• Cover coughs and sneezes with the inside of your elbow.
• Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds; use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.
• Wash hands after using the restroom, before meals, after blowing your nose, and whenever hands are visibly dirty.
