Beacon Elementary is evaluating students in kindergarten and first grade for entry into the Highly Capable Program. Following recent changes in state law, the program will identify and serve approximately 1-3% of the students in each grade level at Beacon Elementary. The Hi-Cap program emphasizes problem solving and higher level thinking skills, social interaction with peers, and development of independent work habits.
If you would like to nominate a student for this program, please complete the nomination form and return it to the school office by April 24, 2015. Nomination forms are available in the school office or by clicking on the links below. Nominated students will be evaluated for the Hi-Cap program using a standardized test, teacher recommendation, and a compilation of student achievement data including state and school assessments. The evaluation data is then weighted and a final score is assigned. Parent permission is needed to release students from class to participate in the testing. Testing for the Hi-Cap program will occur during the first week of May.
If you have any further questions about the program, please contact Julie Aldrich, Highly Capable Program Coordinator, at 249-4331.

Beacon students will enjoy several special activities throughout the month. There will be a Read Across America Assembly on Thursday, March 5, at 9:30 a.m. presented by second grade. Parents are invited to attend. Special guests will read in the classrooms on March 13. Seuss themed menu items will be offered for breakfast or lunch during the month of March. Students should also be on the lookout to see if Thing 1 and Thing 2 stop by for a visit. Students are welcome to wear a fun hat for Crazy Hat Day on March 27.
To continue the celebration, Beacon students will participate in a reading challenge March 5 – March 30. Each class will establish a goal for total number of minutes to be read at home. Minutes can be students reading or parents reading to their children. Students should record the number of minutes read each night on the official form. Classes will tally the total number of minutes read. Classes achieving the established goal will enjoy a popcorn reward party and watch a special Dr. Seuss movie.
