Celebrating Dr. Seuss and Read Across America

Read Across America is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place each year in March in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. In addition to helping children master basic skills, the program focuses on motivating them to read.

Beacon students will enjoy several special activities throughout the month. There will be a Read Across America Assembly on Thursday, March 5, at 9:30 a.m. presented by second grade. Parents are invited to attend. Special guests will read in the classrooms on March 13. Seuss themed menu items will be offered for breakfast or lunch during the month of March. Students should also be on the lookout to see if Thing 1 and Thing 2 stop by for a visit. Students are welcome to wear a fun hat for Crazy Hat Day on March 27

To continue the celebration, Beacon students will participate in a reading challenge March 5 – March 30. Each class will establish a goal for total number of minutes to be read at home. Minutes can be students reading or parents reading to their children. Students should record the number of minutes read each night on the official form. Classes will tally the total number of minutes read. Classes achieving the established goal will enjoy a popcorn reward party and watch a special Dr. Seuss movie.
